what's the story?

Hi! I'm Matt Fern. I'm an Art Director, Graphic Designer and Photographer currently residing in State College, Pa. I spend my days art directing State College Magazine.

As well, I have collaborated independently on such diverse projects as product design, UI and app icon design and multiple commercial photography shoots ranging from food distributors to real estate companies to GQ.com.

I'd love to help you and your company effectively communicate your message and inspire your brand. As an adaptive, committed and industrious thinker, I enjoy creative problem solving, constructive collaboration ... and alliteration, as well as helping you share your story with the world.

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you enjoyed your stay. Before you head out, be sure to check out my resume below and – in case you missed it – my portfolio. See you soon!

experience

State College Magazine
ART DIRECTOR / PHOTOGRAPHER      2007 - Present
Responsible for overall design aesthetic, attitude and brand consistency of a monthly regional magazine, now enjoying its 30th year in publication. As well as graphic design of all magazine covers and feature stories, I would conceptualize, direct and execute all editorial and advertising photography projects on deadline and under budget. Daily collaboration with the editorial team and a encouraging relationship with the design team made for the positive communication needed to make great ideas come to life.
SENIOR GRAPHIC DESIGNER     2005 - 2007

Freelance Art Direction / Graphic Design / Photography

GQ.com     09/2015, 11/2015
Editorial/Lifestyle Photoshoot. I had the privilege of photographing two great outdoorsmen for GQ.com. The first , George Etzweiler, at 95 years young, continues to best his times on Mt. Washington. And Tom Gathman, ex-marine who has taken to a life on the trail. Great subject matter, along with confidence from the team at GQ, I was able to capture great images to complement their stories.

Super Bakery        2015
Photography. Commercial photography for Super Bakery’s new line of bread bowls and breakfast breads. Full-set production, prop sourcing, food styling, hi-res image capture and post-production work. Images licensed for trade show and regional marketing collateral.

RESTEK Corp.        2007 - 2008
Art Direction and Graphic Design. Conceptualized and designed graphical interface for RESTEK’s new Gas Leak Detector product (launched 1st qtr.2009) on behalf of the marketing and Innovations departments. Cutting-edge technology and sleek, industrial branding has served to push the product above $1 million in sales revenue, and is a RESTEK top seller.

Front Pocket Software, LLC        2009 - 2012
